UAE royals attend UK halal export talks
Country/Region: Europe, United Kingdom
Royal guests from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have visited the UK to discuss ways of boosting halal meat exports to the Middle East.

The move to generate interest in the Middle East market comes after the UAE lifted a ban on British meat exports following outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in 2001, which had a devastating impact on the country's agriculture and economy.
The talks were set up by Eblex, England's levy board in UK lamb and beef. The Al Mualla ruling family and UAE trade representatives met the Eblex halal steering committee at Hijaz College Islamic University in Nuneaton to determine whether halal practices in Britain are compliant with UAE standards.
Eblex director, Nick Allen said:
We've realised the halal sector is quite important to us and we're now looking at exports abroad which we haven't done before. For the first time in ten years we're looking to make a sustainable profit. It will make the whole industry thrive and it's really good for the economy.
With one-third of Britain's lamb being exported, exports to the Middle East could replicate New Zealand's halal boom of the late 1980s, when the country's halal industry was fuelled by big contracts with Middle Eastern countries. The Southland Times this week reported that the annual value of the New Zealand halal industry was estimated to be about 800m NZ dollars, including $250m in meat and $400m in dairy products.
