Bringing Hope to Christian Children

Easter is a season of hope. At this time Christians remember with thanksgiving the suffering of Christ for our sins and celebrate with joy His glorious resurrection from the dead. As God’s children we rejoice that although we suffer with Christ now, we will also be glorified with Him (Romans 8:17). And we seek to share that hope with our own earthly children.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13, NIV)

Children suffering for Christ

Children are the Church’s next generation. They have an honoured place within the Christian family, and churches throughout the world try to welcome, nurture and teach them, so that they grow up to become lifelong disciples of Christ. Yet many Christian children today are growing up in the shadow of pressure and persecution.

Children stand in particular danger of physical assault, as easy targets who often cannot protect themselves or run away. They may be unable to get an education because their parents are too poor to afford it, or have to attend a school run by non-Christians where their faith is belittled and they suffer discrimination. They can be threatened or ill-treated as a way of targeting and harrying their parents. And they may be persuaded or bullied into renouncing their faith, or even abducted and forcibly converted to another religion.

These children have to grow up more quickly than they should and learn to deal with pain and distress from an early age. They know what it is to suffer for Christ.

Hope for the children

But Barnabas is bringing hope for the future to many of these children through a range of projects that address their diverse needs:

  • In India, Sudan and Bethlehem, and other places, we enable Christian children to attend Christian schools, by sponsoring school places, funding buildings and equipment, or assisting their families with basic needs
  • In Burma we support orphanages that care for children whose Christian parents have been killed by the Burmese army in raids on their jungle villages
  • In several countries we support refuges for Christian girls and women who are at risk of being forced into marriage or made to convert to Islam
  • In the Arab world, Central Asia and Eastern Europe we help Christian children to stand firm in their faith, despite being despised by the majority, through funding Christian magazines to encourage and teach them

Our dedicated Children’s Fund can be used to support any of these projects and many others that assist children and young people specifically.

Giving hope at Easter

We invite you to join us this Easter time in offering hope to Christian children who are harassed and persecuted for their faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ. Please would you prayerfully consider giving an extra gift to our Children’s Fund, to enable us to direct help to the children who need it most? Most importantly, though, please remember the Church’s next generation in your prayers, asking that despite their sufferings they may rejoice in the hope of God’s glory. (Romans 5:2)

With our Lord’s blessings this Easter,

Dr Patrick Sookhdeo
