Les violences anti-chrétiennes au Nigeria se poursuivent sans relâche : près de 300 chrétiens ont été tués dans un seul diocèse. Des attaques contre trois églises pendant les cultes ont fait 27 morts.

Nigerian Christians are being targeted with unrelenting violence

Le Révérend Timothy Yahaya, l’évêque de Jalingo, une ville dans l’état de Taraba, a dit à Barnabas Fund qu’une série d'attaques dans son diocèse a fait 300 morts au cours des trois dernières semaines.

Puis, dimanche le 29 avril trois églises au nord du Nigeria ont été la cible d’attaques qui ont fait 27 morts.

La première attaque s’est produite alors que des fidèles étaient rassemblés pour le culte dans deux amphithéâtres à l’université Bayero à Kano. A environ 8h30 des bombes ont été lancées dans le bâtiment et des hommes armés ont tiré sur les fidèles. Jusqu’à présent, 22 personnes sont décédées et 23 ont été blessées. Des témoins ont déclaré que les assaillants ont d’abord jeté les explosifs et tiré des coups de feu sur la foule, et que lorsque les chrétiens se sont enfuis, ils les ont chassés en tirant de manière aveugle.

Plus tard ce jour-là, des hommes armés ont ouvert le feu sur une autre église, l’Eglise du Christ au Nigeria (COCIN) à Maiguduri, une ville au nord-est du pays. Cinq personnes, dont le pasteur, ont été tuées dans l’attaque. 

Guerre anti-chrétienne

Personne n’a revendiqué les attaques sur ces églises, mais la plupart des gens soupçonnent le groupe militant islamiste Boko Haram qui a déclaré la guerre aux chrétiens au mois de Mars.

Cette déclaration a suivi un ultimatum de trois jours, lancé à tous les chrétiens, pour qu’ils quittent le nord du pays.  Des attaques incessantes ont suivi, dont le bombardement de nombreuses églises ainsi que des attaques contre des individus chrétiens.

A Kaduna, au moment des services religieux de Pâques, environ 40 personnes ont été tuées, (devant deux églises) au cours d’un attentat-suicide.

Puis, deux églises à Jos, une ville au centre du Nigeria, ont été ciblées en l’espace de deux semaines : une femme enceinte et un enfant de 18 mois étaient parmi les tués.

Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, directeur international de Barnabas Fund, a déclaré :

Dans de nombreuses régions du Nigeria le simple fait d’aller à l’église le dimanche est devenu périlleux pour les chrétiens. Ils ont particulièrement besoin de nos prières alors qu’ils continuent à se réunir courageusement en dépit de la violence incessante.

  • Que le Seigneur accorde de la sagesse aux chrétiens du Nigeria, à ceux qui doivent décider comment répondre à la violence et comment pratiquer leur foi dans un environnement aussi hostile. Prions pour qu’ils soient protégés contre tout nouveau danger.

    • The various measures recently taken against Christian churches and institutions by the government of Sudan add up to a ruthless campaign that may be intended to eradicate Christianity from the country altogether. They were launched by a media drive against alleged “Christianisation” and have focused in particular on those involved in Christian ministry. Numerous church buildings have been demolished, and Christian literature has been seized. President al-Bashir has declared his intention of making Sudan entirely Islamic and of strengthening the place of sharia.     • The Sudanese authorities have intensified their crackdown on Christian activities by targeting Christian-run schools. Two of these in the capital, Khartoum, have been ordered to close. One is a primary school that the authorities discovered was not teaching Islamic studies or separating boys and girls. The other provided English-language lessons for 500 adults; three of its staff had been arrested and interrogated over suspicions that they were evangelising Muslims. Pray that Christian work and witness in Sudan will continue despite the increasingly crippling restrictions being imposed upon them, and that the Gospel will spread there.     • An upsurge of arrests and deportations of Christians in Sudan has further unsettled the country’s vulnerable Christian minority. In January three Christians of South Sudanese origin were detained and then ordered to leave the country because of their involvement with churches and a Christian radio station. The following month a group of at least 55 Christians were detained without charge, falsely accused of receiving money from foreign countries. Dozens of expatriate Christians have also been deported. Pray that this frequent and severe harassment will stop, and that the churches of Sudan will be allowed to worship and serve the Lord in peace.     • Pray for 14 Christians in Nghe An, Vietnam, who were sentenced in January to between three and 13 years in prison on charges of subversion against the state. Their lawyers complained that the Christians had been subjected to torture, including sleep deprivation, and coerced into confessing crimes that they had not committed. Some of them had apparently been detained by police at random, some at a church service. During the two-day trial, thousands of Christians staged a protest against the arbitrary and illegal arrest of innocent people. Pray that the sentences will be revoked and the Christians released, and that the authorities will stop harassing and bullying the Christian community.
