Our project co-ordinators from Pakistan are coming to Encourage on 21 June 2025 to talk about persecution in Pakistan.
For security reasons, we are not sharing their names, but we can tell you that our co-ordinators are helping Barnabas do incredible work in a challenging environment. They have witnessed Christian persecution first-hand, and have many years of experience in advocacy and humanitarian action. They have helped Barnabas run many successful projects improving the lives of poor and persecuted believers in Pakistan.

Christians are particularly targeted by Pakistan's infamous "blasphemy" laws
Advocacy underpinned by faith
Our project co-ordinators will be speaking about persecution in Pakistan, including “blasphemy” laws, labour and employment issues in the brick kiln industry, education and economic growth amongst youth in the Christian community, abduction and forced conversion.
They both have a passion for helping persecuted believers, which is underpinned by their strong Christian faith and deep love for God’s family.

Pakistan is a Muslim-majority country where Christians face persecution in a myriad of ways
Persecution in Pakistan
Christians are a small and despised minority in Pakistan, making up 2-3% of the population. Believers often experience severe poverty because of discrimination in employment. Many work low-paid, dirty and dangerous jobs, often being forced to put their lives at risk.

With the help of our project co-ordinators, Barnabas has freed hundreds of Christian families from bonded labour in Pakistan's brick kilns
Christians also make up more than 90% of workers at brick kilns, where many are effectively slaves. Workers are paid so little that if an emergency arises or the kiln goes through a period of closure, they have no option but to take out loans from the owners of the kilns to be able to feed their families. Brick kiln owners apply unmanageable levels of interest to their employees’ debt, and as a result, the debt may never be paid off in full. Until the debt is repaid, the workers become trapped and are unable to seek out another job.
Islamists in Pakistan sometimes try and force Christians to convert. Christians are also particularly vulnerable to false accusations and charges under “blasphemy” laws, some of which carry mandatory death sentences. Islamist mobs are a common response to “blasphemy” accusations against Christians, even when the accused has been acquitted.
