“I can barely buy enough rice or pasta for myself,” said Mariam, a widow in Cairo. Her situation is typical of widows in Egypt’s marginalized Christian community.
Christian widows and orphans here are among the most vulnerable groups. They face significant social and economic hardship, and many are without pensions or any form of financial security.
Since 2022 Egypt has been gripped by a severe economic crisis, with food prices rising by more than 30% annually. Nearly two-thirds of Egypt’s population live below the poverty line.

Widows often do not have family members able to care for them. Orphans are at risk of exploitation, with promises of housing or money often leading them into harmful situations.

Widows and orphans in desperate need often have nowhere else to turn, and the churches, though themselves facing financial difficulties, are stepping in to offer help. However, they need support to meet this pressing need.
In response, Barnabas Aid aims to support 250 widows and orphans in Egypt through local Christian churches, who are struggling under the weight of Egypt’s economic crisis but remain committed to providing for their most vulnerable members.
